If you’re looking for a more natural, non-toxic alternative to chemically bleaching your pearly whites, read on for our 4 favorite DIY remedies to remove stains and brighten your gorgeous smile.

4 DIY Tooth Whitening Remedies

The Classic DIY Whitening Paste – Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda

This is an old trick I remember trying as a teenager. This method can give you pretty good results. All you need is a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide and enough plain baking soda to mix into a paste.

To try this method, apply the paste to your toothbrush and brush your teeth. It’s not the tastiest mixture, but it beats chemically whitening your teeth any day. You can also rinse your mouth out with diluted hydrogen peroxide for a few seconds. Just make sure you don’t swallow it!

You should really only use this paste occasionally, as both baking soda and hydrogen peroxide are abrasive. Try brushing with this baking soda paste for 3 to 5 consecutive days, and then wait 3 to 6 months before using it again.

A Fruity Take on Baking Soda Paste – Strawberry Paste

Strawberries contain malic acid and vitamin c, both of which can do wonders for your smile. Malic acid is great for removing stains from coffee, tea, and red wine, and vitamin C is great for preventing plaque buildup.

To try this out, just mash up a couple of strawberries and add a teaspoon of baking soda. Apply it to your toothbrush and brush your teeth for 5 to 7 minutes. Remember, baking soda is an abrasive ingredient so you shouldn’t use this paste every day.

Totally Bananas – Non-Abrasive Tooth Whitener

Bananas are rich in potassium, manganese, and magnesium. When absorbed into your enamel, these minerals have whitening effects. As strange as it may sound, rubbing in the inside of a ripe banana peel on your teeth can help remove stains and keep your smile sparkling.

To try this method, brush and floss your teeth, then rub the inside of a ripe banana peel on your teeth for about 2 minutes. Then rinse and repeat a couple more times. You can do this as often as you like!

An Apple A Day Keeps The Dentist Away – Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains acid which acts as a powerful cleansing agent. In addition, it helps maintain the pH balance in your mouth. It helps brighten your smile and it’s great for gum health as well. It’s definitely not as tasty as a mouthful of strawberries, but it is effective.

To try this method, dip your toothbrush in apple cider vinegar and brush your teeth as you normally would. To make this solution stronger, you can mix apple cider vinegar with baking soda to form a paste and brush for about 2 minutes, rinsing well when you are finished. You can also rinse your mouth with apple cider vinegar for whitening effects over time. As pointed out previously, baking soda is abrasive so you should only use this method about once a week.
